Sunetra Pawar to take oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM today

Sunetra Pawar is set to take oath on Saturday as Maharashtra’s first woman deputy chief minister, marking a major political transition following the death of NCP leader Ajit Pawar. The Rajya Sabha MP arrived in Mumbai earlier in the day as preparations for the swearing-in ceremony got underway. She reached Devgiri, the official residence of her late husband in south Mumbai, in the early hours, accompanied by her son Parth. Though not a member of either House of the Maharashtra legislature, Sunetra Pawar is expected to be elected leader of the Nationalist Congress Party’s legislature wing at a party meeting scheduled later in the afternoon.

Her elevation comes amid speculation about the future of the NCP after Ajit Pawar’s death in an air crash earlier this week. However, sources from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) and members of the Pawar family said they were not informed about her decision to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the ruling alliance would support any decision taken by Ajit Pawar’s family and the NCP regarding the deputy chief minister’s post. He said the BJP stood firmly with the Pawar family during the transition.

US announces new sanctions against Iran officials

The United States on Friday announced new sanctions against Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and several other senior officials over Tehran’s handling of recent anti-government protests. The US Treasury Department said Momeni supervises Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces, which it accused of playing a central role in the deaths of thousands of protesters during the crackdown.

The sanctions also cover a number of high-ranking officers from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as Iranian businessman Babak Morteza Zanjani. US authorities allege Zanjani embezzled billions of dollars belonging to the Iranian public. In an unprecedented step, the Treasury Department also imposed sanctions on digital currency exchanges linked to Zanjani, saying these platforms processed significant transactions tied to entities associated with the IRGC.
